Monthly Job-Seeker Advice

Let’s discuss the resume this edition and a few of the common issues that we see when helping military job-seekers land their next role.

  1. The Professional Summary: Far too often we see individuals with two paragraph professional summaries full of buzzwords like “results-oriented”. While there is nothing wrong with using one or two of these, that is not what will set you apart as a candidate. Consider a 3-4 sentence professional summary that clearly highlights your: (1) relevant experience including the number of years (2) relevant education, certification, clearance, etc (3) role you are seeking

  2. What to Include: Your resume does not need to be everything you have ever done. In fact, for some roles it might feel like you are cutting out a huge portion of what you have done. However, you want to try to get your resume down to one page and have only the things that speak to why you are right for THIS job on the page. Having a resume that does include everything you have ever done, a “master resume” to pull from makes creating individual resumes for roles easy.

  3. Your Bullets: These are not a job description they are results that you produced. So don’t say “I was responsible for..” because that doesn’t tell me if you performed well. Focus on outcomes and don’t be afraid to estimate those outcomes in order to quantify them. Go from “Responsible for the training of all infantry officers in X course” to “Led X topic curriculum design and delivery to X students with an X% pass rate”.

  4. The Length: If it is not a federal resume, aim for one page. There are people with a decade plus in the private sector who can make one-page work, you can too. At most, go to two pages but this is for someone with significant private sector experience, applying to a role in which the details of each individual position they held in the service is important (some contracting), or applying to a federal role.

  5. Double Check For: Consistency, is the text different sizes, colors, does it look weird? Is it in PDF format like it should be? Is it titled FIRSTLASTRESUME? Are there periods in some places but not others? Etc etc etc.

Hegseth is Confirmed as Secretary of Defense

Pete Hegseth has been confirmed as the next U.S. Secretary of Defense by a tight Senate vote of 51-50, with Vice President JD Vance casting the deciding vote. Hegseth, a former Fox News host and Iraq War veteran, faced criticism over past allegations, including misconduct and leadership concerns. However, he received strong backing from President Trump, emphasizing the need for military readiness. His confirmation, the narrowest for a defense secretary, came after opposition from some Republicans and Democrats, who questioned his judgment. Despite the controversies, Hegseth will replace Robert Salesses as defense secretary and begin his tenure soon.

DOD Exempt from Federal Hiring Freeze

The Department of Defense has been granted a full exemption from President Trump’s civilian hiring freeze, ensuring that hiring for positions such as child care, commissaries, and schools on military bases can continue. This exemption, confirmed through Army and Air Force memos, clarifies that all DOD civilian personnel hiring is unaffected despite initial uncertainty. The hiring freeze, which took effect on January 20, applies to most federal positions and aims to reduce the government workforce through efficiency measures and attrition. However, the Office of Personnel Management confirmed that DOD is not subject to the restrictions. The freeze remains in place for at least 90 days until a workforce reduction plan is issued.

Military Spouses Should Be Able to Continue Working Remotely

A federal memo states that military spouses working remotely for the government "should" be allowed to continue doing so, but the language does not explicitly require agencies to grant exemptions. The uncertainty stems from President Trump’s return-to-office policy for federal employees, which has left many military spouses concerned about their job stability. While some agencies, like the VA and HHS, have clarified exemptions for military spouses, others have not, leading to confusion. Advocates warn that delays in policy clarification may force families to make difficult decisions about relocation and employment. Despite existing laws supporting military spouse telework, inconsistencies in agency enforcement continue to create anxiety.

Texas Deploys Over 400 National Guard Troops to Strengthen Border Security

Governor Greg Abbott is sending over 400 Texas soldiers to the U.S.-Mexico border to assist Border Patrol in enforcing immigration laws. The Texas Tactical Border Force will work with federal troops, and specialized aircraft like C-130s and Chinook helicopters will be deployed. This effort is part of Operation Lone Star, launched in 2021. Abbott thanked the Trump administration for its partnership, aiming to strengthen border security. Additionally, Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham offered a ranch for mass deportations to support the immigration crackdown.
